With 46,000 employees in more than 40 countries, Stora Enso leads the global market as an integrated paper, packaging, and forest products company. Their offerings include publication and fine paper, packaging board, and wood products. Stora Enso focuses on customer service and delivering results in an environmentally responsible way.StoraEnso

In 2002, Stora Enso contacted Wagner Industries about improving their shipping operations for the Southeastern U.S. They had been using a less-than-truckload approach to transport products from the upper Midwest to the Southeast, however the time and costs associated with this method were quickly becoming unmanageable.

After taking the time to thoroughly understand Stora Enso's needs, Wagner proposed integrating their the Distribution Center and Transportation Management Services into a single unified operation. Stora Enso agreed with Wagner's recommendations and gave approval to start immediately.

Wagner was able to quickly locate and lease 87,500 square feet of Northern Florida warehouse space, with access to both rail and truck lines. The Wagner team then staffed the facility with trained managers and personnel, designed the layout for an efficient workflow, kept fixed costs under control and constructed a comprehensive information system.

Stora Enso's inventory consisted of over 700 SKUs from two different business units, and of roll stock, skids, folio, and cut stock in cartons. The company also received regular delivery of paper lines from Finland and Germany which arrived via ship at Charleston and then traveled overland to Wagner's facilities via truck. To insure next-day delivery, Wagner initiated a 5:00 p.m. (EST) order cut-off time for Stora Enso's customers; although orders and/or modifications were still accepted up until 5:30 p.m. and were still able to arrive at their destination by noon the next day.

Each day at 5:30, Wagner finalized the day's transportation needs and began sourcing carriers. Runs were scheduled on a daily basis, rather than having a pre-set schedule, insuring that clients up to 350 miles away would still receive delivery by the promised hour. Wagner's warehouse system took care of scanning pallets, tracking all product inventories, creating reports for Stora Enso, checking delivery status and scheduling weekend shifts to accommodate any additional shipping requirements.

Critical to the success of this integrated solution, was the accurate exchange of information. Stora Enso's data was received, processed and returned in the most efficient manner possible thanks to the comprehensive EDI processes established by Wagner.
